Podcast: Commentary - Real Talk About Attendance + Aggies Soccer and Volleyball Fall on Thursday

Aggies Soccer in a Big Scoring Drought + Volleyball Loses After Being Up 2 sets to 1.

Hello All, I have a podcast commentary for you about attendance. After a lot of chatter about the low attendance, I decided to do a real deep dive conversation with you about attendance and all that goes into that. I do feel that the Aggies deserve more fans in the seats, but fans need to be aware and cognizant of the challenges, through no fault of their own, that NM State has to deal with on a daily basis.

We’re hoping for a big crowd at the Liberty game, so I hope my words ring true to you. If you have a chance to go to this unique game, which is on national TV, which is rare, that is late night, which is rare, and where a team that played in a major bowl is playing us, which is rare, then try to make it.

Please don’t think that NM State doesn’t give effort to pack the stadium. I think they do a lot!

This is a big one, as they all are when all sports are going on, so let’s get into it.

Quick Summaries of the two events that happened last night:

Volleyball: NM State loses in 5 sets to San Francisco (19-25, 25-19, 26-24, 22-25, 4-15)

Funny moment where the ESPN broadcast had us as “CSU Northridge” for a good chunk of the first half.

San Francisco was picked 9th in the WCC at the beginning of the season. They struggled in their first 3 games, losing two of them. But it didn’t look that way on Thursday night.

The Dons came into this game ready, winning the first set 25-19 in Sacramento. After letting the Aggies took the next two sets, it felt like NM State was on the ropes.

There were stretches where the Aggies looked like their mojo was back, but a strong performance by USF in the 4th set, where they opened up a big lead, 23-16. The Aggies tried making a comeback, but the deficit was too great, losing 25-22.

The fifth set was brutal. Losing 15-4, and being down 8-2 early in the set, it felt inevitable and the Aggies did not put up much of a fight as they fell in the final set. 30 attack errors in the game doomed the team.

The Aggies have had a couple sets in the last two games where it felt like it went off the rails. NM State has a short time to regroup, as they have Sacramento State at 8pm Friday night. The Aggies are currently 1-2 on the season, while the Dons improve to 2-2.

Amelia Dombrowska had 20 kills for USF to lead the way on Thursday.

Aggies Soccer Falls to Arizona 1-0, Scoreless in last 198 minutes of game action

The Aggies, now 4-2-1 after Thursday’s game is showing an offensive deficiency at the moment. Ever since Loma McNeese’s goal in the 72nd minute against Pacific last Thursday, the Aggies have not scored a goal. The problem with that is the Aggies have played and lost two more games since that moment.

The Wildcats put together a clean sheet of the Aggies 1-0. Marley Chappel scored a goal in the 19th minute and that was all the difference that the Wildcats needed. Olivia Ramey gets credited with the clean sheet with 3 saves on the day. The Aggies did not have very many opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net and it showed with the lack of offensive production.

The only goal of the game came on an odd bounce that Valerie Guha didn’t play well and Chappel put it in the net. Mya Gonzales had one of the Aggies 3 shots and it bounced off the crossbar, which would have equaled this game. But it was not to be.

There has to be some concern of a nearly 200-minute of game-time scoring drough. Hopefully the Aggies can overcome that in their next match against the UC Davis Aggies, which is Sunday at 1pm. I know, I know, football season is coming upon us, but make some time if you have time and see if our Aggies can break out of their slump against another set of Aggies.

Final Score:
Arizona 1, NM State 0

  • Goals: Arizona 1, NM State 0

  • Shots: Arizona 13, NM State 5
