David Cobb Reportedly No Longer with NM State

New Mexico State assistant head coach, running backs coach and general manager David Cobb was reportedly dismissed by New Mexico State University late Thursday afternoon and is no longer with the team.

Sources close to the athletic department confirmed the move to AGGREGATOR after this publication cited information from within the New Mexico State athletic department.

Separately, sources also told AGGREGATOR that NCAA representatives were reportedly on the Las Cruces campus at some point this week.

No official reason for Cobb's departure has been announced.

AGGREGATOR has not independently confirmed the reported NCAA visit and has not established any connection between the reported presence of NCAA representatives and Cobb's departure from the program.

I have reached out to the NCAA for a statement through official channels and I’ll patiently await an email in the morning which I’ll then post to you all.

Cobb had become one of the most visible members of Tony Sanchez’s coaching staff. In addition to serving as New Mexico State’s running backs coach, he held the titles of assistant head coach and general manager, overseeing much of the Aggies’ roster construction and transfer portal efforts.

He was entering what would have been his fourth season in Las Cruces after originally joining Jerry Kill’s staff in 2023 before being promoted to assistant head coach and general manager ahead of the 2025 season.

Despite injuries in 2025 and significant roster turnover following the spring transfer portal, one of New Mexico State's strengths during Cobb's tenure was its running game.

That success was highlighted in 2024 when Mike Washington, who was later selected by the Las Vegas Raiders, and Seth McGowan, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Indianapolis Colts, became the first pair of Aggie running backs since 2000 to each rush for more than 700 yards in the same season. New Mexico State finished that year with the third-ranked rushing attack in Conference USA, averaging 180 rushing yards per game.

Cobb also brought an NFL pedigree to Las Cruces. Before joining the Aggies, he served as a full-time scout for the Carolina Panthers in 2022 after working as a scouting intern with the Tennessee Titans in 2020.

As a player, Cobb was selected by the Titans in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears before continuing his professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League in 2018 and the San Antonio Commanders of the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

His playing career at Minnesota was equally impressive. Cobb earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2014 under then-head coach Jerry Kill, who later brought him to Las Cruces as part of his inaugural New Mexico State coaching staff in 2023. Cobb rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his final two collegiate seasons, including 1,626 yards as a senior in 2014. That season, he ranked among the conference’s elite running backs alongside future NFL stars Ezekiel Elliott and Melvin Gordon.

On a personal note, Coach Cobb was always cordial with me and was consistently professional in our interactions. He was also one of the members of the coaching staff who acknowledged AGGREGATOR as it grew over the past several years.

Multiple sources have confirmed to AGGREGATOR that Cobb is no longer with the football program, and it is my obligation to report that news and allow readers to process it.

As for the reported NCAA presence on campus this week, I await hearing from the NCAA after reaching out.

I did not ask the organization to comment on any potential investigation or disclose confidential information—only to confirm whether NCAA personnel visited campus this week.

As of press time, I have not received a response. I will update it when I do get it.
